What are MP3s ?

Recently I was visited by a relative who wanted to know what this "M3R" thing was all about.   I corrected him.  "You mean MP3s".  His reply was "M3R...MP3...whatever".  :)

The frustration he was feeling is understandable, especially since he was a musician who was used to dealing with sheet music and tape recorders.

What is an mp3?

Quick Answer: An MP3 is a compressed digital recording.

An Mp3 is not necessarily a copyrighted song.  It is not an illegal property.  An MP3 does not have to come from Napster or the Internet.  Having an MP3 file does not make you a pirate!!

An MP3 is a compressed digital recording!  This could be a recording of you singing in the shower or perhaps a recording of your kid reciting their ABC's.

The MP3 format has become popular due to the fact that it is compressed and can store a 4 minute song in about 4 MB (4 million bytes.)  Thus, you can store a lot of MP3 files on your computer.
